How Daily Table sells healthy food to the poor at junk food prices
This nonprofit grocery store in a low-income Boston neighborhood is on track to bring in $2.3 million in revenue this year, according to founder Doug Rauch. The store acquires imperfect produce and packaged food nearing its expiration date and sells it for bargain prices, in addition to prepared foods. Rauch says Daily Table is losing about $50,000 a month because of overhead and logistics costs, while it turns a profit on the products it sells. Most of the highest-grossing dog food brands in the U.S. are owned by two companies. Yet the industry—which has been troubled by recalls, lawsuits and scrutiny around manufacturing practices—is ripe for disruption. Ollie, founded in 2016, utilizes nutritionists, data and algorithms to help create healthy dog food made from real food and supplements that's flash-frozen and delivered to customers' doors. For years, we've been told fat clogs our arteries. Now, scientists say that's all wrong
A team from the National Institutes of Health, Mayo Clinic and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill looked at a previously unreported study that followed the diets of more than 9,000 men and women living in mental health hospitals or nursing homes in Minnesota. The patients who ate diets high in plant fats had 14 percent lower cholesterol than their animal fat-eating peers but a higher risk of death than those who ate more saturated fats.
