Charities are realizing that poor people also deserve healthy food
After decades of being dumping grounds for old canned food, bread and macaroni and cheese, many food pantries and soup kitchens are stepping up their standards. Feeding America just announced a plan to work with its food banks to offer more fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins to customers, in response to rampant diabetes and obesity rates, especially among low-income populations. Part of that program involves collecting unsold or unwanted produce from growers, as well as preserving fresh produce. Some food banks are also working on initiatives of their own.
